    Personal life

    Born in 1948 in Gbarnga, Liberia, he was the son of an Americo-Liberian father and a native Liberian mother.
    Taylor attended school in Monrovia before being sent to study abroad in the United States at the age of 15.

    He returned to Liberia in 1972 after completing his studies.
    He married Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who later became the first female president of Liberia, in 1966. The couple had three children together.
    In addition to his political career, Taylor was also known for his interest in soccer.

    He coached the Liberian national team from 1990 until 1996.
